Soil Aeration and Drainage

Soil Aeration Services

Soil aeration is essential for maintaining strong, healthy grass growth. Over time, soil naturally becomes compacted, restricting the movement of air, water, and nutrients. Aerating the soil opens it up to allow oxygen in, encouraging deeper root development and improving overall turf health. It also enhances surface water absorption and drainage, helping to prevent ponding.

We use a range of specialised equipment suitable for any size area – from home and commercial lawns to golf courses, bowling and croquet greens, school grounds, and sports fields.

Our aeration services include:

Dethatching to remove the thatch layer that builds up in lawns

Coring for aerating lawns and larger turf areas

Verti-draining or Shatter Tining for deep-tine aeration of larger areas

Ground Hog® for advanced aeration of large turf surfaces

Dethatching

Dethatching helps restore your lawn’s health by removing the thick layer of dead and living plant material that can build up between the grass and soil surface. Excessive thatch can harbour disease and insects, restrict drainage, encourage weed growth, and ultimately damage your lawn if left untreated.

Removes thick layers of thatch to improve air, water, and nutrient movement

Helps prevent disease, insects, and poor drainage

Best carried out during autumn for optimal recovery

Promotes stronger, healthier growth

Suitable for all lawn sizes

After dethatching, we recommend applying fertiliser and oversowing with grass seed if needed to promote even regrowth.

Coring

Coring is an effective way to rejuvenate lawns that are compacted or struggling to grow evenly. Like dethatching, it helps remove thatch buildup while also aerating the soil to promote stronger, healthier turf.

Enhances air, water, and nutrient movement through the soil profile

Encourages healthier, more resilient grass growth

Suitable for lawns of all sizes and soil types

Our coring machines use hollow tines to remove small plugs of soil, creating space for oxygen, water, and fertiliser to reach the root zone. After coring, the holes can be left open or filled with fresh topsoil and fertiliser to further improve soil quality.

Verti-Draining or Shatter Tining

Verti-draining and shatter tining are deep-tine aeration methods that relieve soil compaction, improve drainage, and introduce air to the root zone – resulting in stronger, healthier turf.

Verti-draining uses solid round tines to penetrate deep into the soil

Shatter tining features uniquely shaped cross tines that create channels with minimal surface disturbance

Both are ideal for sportsgrounds and high-use turf areas prone to waterlogging

While each method delivers excellent results, shatter tining is generally preferred for its superior compaction relief and minimal disruption to the playing surface.

Ground Hog® Soil Aeration

Our Ground Hog® aerator is a powerful and efficient machine designed to penetrate even the hardest soils, providing effective aeration across large areas in minimal time. The Ground Hog® can also be fitted with a seeding attachment, allowing aeration and oversowing to be completed simultaneously for greater efficiency and cost savings.

Easily penetrates compacted or hard soils

Covers large areas quickly and efficiently

Leaves minimal surface disturbance on grassed areas after next mowing

Regular aeration helps sports fields and high-use turf areas remain healthy, resilient, and better able to handle heavy traffic and seasonal stress.
